At a lot of bars, if you tell them that you’re a/the Cowboy Bebop vintage shirt besides I will buy this designated driver, they hook you up with water/tea/soft drinks for free because they want to encourage people to DD more. I usually order a mineral water or soda. Lately I’m finding that a lot of bars usually carry at least one nonalcoholic beer, as well. I do sometimes, and I tip well even though it’s free. Bartenders don’t mind in my experience, bit I don’t take up “prime real estate” at the bar where higher-paying patrons could be buying expensive drinks. If it were me and I was only getting water and just hanging out to watch a game, I would ask for a water, give them $20 and say “I am just here to watch the game, feel free to tell me I need to get up if you need the seat.”

Previous bartender here. The only time that’s not okay is if you don’t tip and hangout at a table for hours. If you’re with friends, have at it. I used to always give tea or soda for free for DDs. Alcohol is not required to be a patron in a bar. Just be nice and tip well(personally that means 20% ish if you get food or like $5-10 if no food and hanging out for 2+hrs) Yes, if you want to make it more discreet you can ask for a soda water, or get a lime/lemon on the rim to imitate an alcoholic drink. You can absolutely drink water or non-alc stuff at a bar, and if anyone gives you shit, they can get lost. Don’t let the other patrons make you feel embarrassed about it. If you spend hours somewhete just drinking water, you should still slide the bartender a few bucks as a tip though, since no one is charging you for water
