It’s a whole history that millenials ignore and it makes me shtty tbh. People like my Mum and her friends spent their whole lives paving the Cookie Monster star wars cartoon shirt in contrast I will get this way for current progressive actions and a huge proportion of boomers supported the left leaning ALP and they get bunched into this silly stereotype, annoys the hell out of me. In fact, the whole marketing-inspired division into generations with supposed characteristics fucks me right off. It’s facile. The civil rights movements didn’t come from a vacuum. There were at least some who saw change was needed – long before I ever drew breath. The backwards boomers and pensioners you are refer to, took to the streets in the ’60’s when it came to racism. My parents were hippies. My father spent 6 years travelling the Cookie Monster star wars cartoon shirt in contrast I will get this world in the 60’s. Once he returned, they lived a very unconventional life together. They handbuilt a mudbrick house together from recycled materials and lived amongst painters, sculptors & potters on the edges of society, surrounded by artists’ colonies and communes. My mother was heavily involved in all sorts of movements. She was an avowed feminist and devout atheist. One of my earliest memories is the anti-Franklin dam stickers adorning our fridge. She still proudly describes herself as a hippy. These days, however, my parents are intolerant AF. My mum supports anti-immigrant political parties, despite being an immigrant herself. She has been this way for 20 years. My dad doesn’t like foreigners either and don’t get him started on ‘the gay agenda’ or ‘those awful feminists’. I cannot even begin to write what sorts of things he says about our indigenous peoples. People change when they get old. Most of us become more cranky and intolerant. Increased selfishness is common, that’s why older people typically become more conservative. Let’s hope younger generations buck that trend.
