When a company gets 10000 resumes, they need to reduce the Conquer The World With Fire And Flight Motivational Dragon T-Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this number down to a manageable amount. What better way to reduce the number by a large amount than by removing anyone without the right education. People with little work experience are gone from the pile. Spelling and grammar mistakes are gone. They keep doing this until the number of resumes becomes manageable. For generations before us, going to college was not as common and was seen as a stable path to a professional career and middle to upper class living. It used to be that a high school or GED graduate was the bare minimum needed to earn a livable wage and have a comfortable living. Nowadays, with a lot more people obtaining a bachelors it causes degree escalation where the four year degree is now the new minimum. People are getting more graduate degrees too, and soon having a masters will be much more common. This increases competition in the job market and entry level jobs that used to just required a GED have now required a four year degree, and so on. Colleges themselves are seemingly becoming diploma mills as we’ve seen with much tuition hikes higher than inflation. Even though they’re mostly non-profit, they know that students will have access to loans (which is a while another topic) and many subsidized by government loans. So university institutions are incentivized to increase admissions, offer more programs, etc that will increase revenue.

This isn’t necessarily a bad thing since more education is always a net positive for society but the Conquer The World With Fire And Flight Motivational Dragon T-Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this ideals of high education has changed drastically. It’s now become a job application checkbox and networking tool, especially at the more elite schools. It’s why there’s more emphasis on getting a useful degree in STEM as opposed to liberal arts. It used to be a philosophy degree can still land you a job somewhere but that’s no longer the case due to saturation of college-degree holders in the job market. Same thing goes to prestige and rankings. There’s a lot more emphasis thanks to US News & Report and other media. For certain elite professional careers like in high finance, business, law, etc. it matters that you attend a “target” school (like Ivy League) where the top companies exclusively recruit at. It’s not impossible to break into Goldman Sachs or Bain coming from a less known school, but it’ll be very difficult and circumstantial. Those prestigious white shoe firms simply do not recruit from schools outside the top 25 or so. I’m glad there’s more open favorability and dialogue for careers that don’t need a degree like in IT/Tech, Trades, Sales. It’s a lot more common now to be able to earn really good money for IT careers where certifications and hard skills matter way more than having a degree. I have plenty of friends and family who earn a good living and never went to college because they specialized in an in-demand niche like programming or cybersecurity by learning themselves and picking up relevant certs.
