Holy crap is that ever a red flag. It means your boss is probably eyeing retirement and probably dgaf if he leaves the Coffee Christ Offers Forgiveness For Everyone Everywhere T-Shirt and I love this whole show in flames when he goes. He’s got short-timer’s bad. Of course a Boomer would say that. They can afford to live! I’m so sick of the older generation blaming everything on what WE (the younger gen) do and pretend that they didn’t have it easier. That’s SOOOO irritating eh. Sorry your boss is clearly unaware that prices have gone up significantly since he was in his younger days. Okay boss, if money doesn’t matter, give me more of yours. That’s not a problem, right? You just said that money doesn’t matter to you, right? “You’re right, I shouldn’t pursue money, I quit. Seeing as how you don’t want to pursue money, I assume you won’t care.” He’s telling you no. Now it’s up to you to either move on for more pay or stick around at a place where you aren’t going to make more money. He’s been very clear. Wow, so he’s deciding what’s best for you and your family? Like how dare you want a different life than him? Get the fuck put of there and leave this narcissistic moron in the dust as soon as you can. You are worth so much more OP. Don’t take it personally, he’s not looking at the big picture and clearly thinks he’s in control. You can’t force him to give you a raise but you can find employment elsewhere. Once you do remind him of this conversation and thank him for being honest because up until that point you were not aware that he didn’t value you as an employee so you found someone who does.

I would suggest that he and you switch salaries…money is no big thing to him so there should be no problem with living with less AND it’ll give you the Coffee Christ Offers Forgiveness For Everyone Everywhere T-Shirt and I love this opportunity to be enlightened how truly “evil” more money is. Best advice- I would go find a new place to play. There’s places out there that understand that being able to afford to eat = happiness. “Hell yeah, boss, we are totally on the same page. So I expect that raise to be included in my next pacheck, bye” and walk away He says as he pulls more money than you. What a patronizing asshole, “I know I have more money and power, but you should be happy you are able to be here” There is by far nothing more infuriating than negotiating your salary/raise with someone and having them respond with “life advice” instead. Like buddy, I don’t respect your opinion or viewpoint on my salary, I don’t care if you think it’s enough! I’m talking to you for the sole purpose of discussing my income, not because I’m curious what your feelings about it are. My old boss told me “sometimes you have to go hungry” then fired me after I asked for a raise and told him I couldn’t put food in my fridge and pay all my bills after 5 years of work with only a .50 cent raise. They will always tell you that you should want less, but that is not what got them onto position of power. They wanted more and took it, they just don’t want you to know you can too. A lot of companies have a complicated system designed to give tiny raises and prevent asking for raises by tying the hands of the manager. I decided in my last job there wasn’t much point in asking for a raise. If I wanted more money, I’d need to have one foot out the door. Even then, only a small fraction of people got their counter-offer. When I left, I was done and they didn’t offer me any more money.
