Most people I’ve had this conversation with weren’t aware of this law at all. They just think there are two lanes. I think it’s slowly becoming more common knowledge, though (hopefully.) I just drive in the road, I drive in what ever lane is going the fastest. “The passing lane” was never taught to me and i never needed it to get my license, in fact i only recently learned about it from something similar to this question. I stay right on the highway but if I am in a city traffic environment and I need to make a left within the next mile I am going to sit in the left lane because too many drivers are assholes who will speed up to stop you from changing lanes.

Unless those who are posting claiming to be passing people are lying. There’s nothing more that will turn me into someone with rage issues than a left lane camper. Im a digital nomad and see them everywhere. Happily traveling in the left lane with absolutely no reason (clear freeway). But I have been in a situation where I was targeted by someone who wanted me out of the lane. I was actively (ie cars to my right) passing folks going 15-20 mph over the speed limit. A truck approached me doing over 100. I got over as soon as I could. He still drove on the left shoulder to kick rocks at my car causing my windshield to crack. Be careful out there folks. Use the passing lane for passing. Even if you do, be prepared to get the fuck over regardless for your safety. People are assholes in both ways.
