I know people that worked 30, 40, even 50 years on the Nevada cabaret circuits, that never had to work a day job in their lives because they gigged in the neighborhood of 250 to 300 nights a year, and now they’re struggling to get by on one weekend gig a month at best. They’re struggling, and the worst part is yet to come. Because they’re all self-employed “independent contractors”, there is no retirement, unless they made sure to pay into Social Security when they filed their taxes. I was comparatively lucky, and found a job in the grocery business that pays reasonably well and suits my temperament as well as my body clock. But I have no illusions. I will likely have to work until I die because I lived hand-to-mouth on the road, and what little I was able to save over that time disappeared in weeks as I struggled to find my current job.
