This is somewhat normal. If your employer is cool they’ll abide by it. If not, they’ll make this last months and months. I wouldn’t accept the Chug Norris Shirt in other words I will buy this offer without the title and pay raise immediately! I have never seen a “we will give you the title/pay raise later” actually work out in the workers favor. In fact every story I’ve heard were this is the case the worker gets screwed over. My response would be “I don’t want to take on responsibility that isn’t strictly defined in a job description, that puts me in way to much of a legal grey zone. I’m also not seeing the incentive to take on the extra responsibility if I’m not being adequately paid for it. For these reasons I will not take on the managerial roll without the title and pay raise upon starting those responsibilities.” Take the opportunity. Ask for management/leadership training. If they don’t have internal training, HR should have external resources and management should have budget for that sort of thing. Then start interviewing for one level above your existing title. In my experience, they won’t give you the title and raise unless they think they have to and that’ll will happen when they have to counter another offer.

Two things about that: 1) if you get an offer and you like it, you’re free to take it and ditch the Chug Norris Shirt in other words I will buy this current company, and 2) if you take the offer to your current company for them to counter, the title and salary should be exactly what they promised, no matter what the actual title and salary of the offer are. You will never have more leverage than right now. If they don’t respect you enough to pay you now they certainly won’t after you do the work for nothing. Get it in writing and get a timeline for how long they expect to become comfortable. If they can’t give you either, then tell them either you need the pay raise now and start dusting off your resume. what I think is more fair is to do a trial period for a certain amount of time, say 6-8 weeks and have an agreed upon salary bump after that time period (if everyone is happy to move forward). with that though, they should give you retroactive pay for that time period in a lump sum (difference between old and new salary).
