I have worked a few shutdowns on a Union Job. Doesn’t mean everyone has to work, but most people do because of the Christian Harris American football linebacker Texans 10 T-Shirt it is in the first place but overtime pay. Personally I loved working shutdowns. Hell yeah, I’m currently on my 19th day in a row out of 60… I do pipe oil flushing and can’t complain about the money, no rest for the wicked right? Every steward has a copy of the contract. Find your steward in your area/shift and ask them. Random people online can’t help you. We don’t know what union your in or what local or what your contract says. My boss tried to change our shifts from 7am to 6am and I simply told him look at the contract I signed, I’m 7-3 not 6-3 … sorry I’m not coming in an hour early. The way it works in Alberta is you can be made to work a maximum of 24 days straight then you must be given 4 days off. Most unions have a pdf of the collective agreement available online. If you cannot reach your union steward then call the union’s head office and speak with a staff rep The Employment Standards Code requires one day of rest in every work week, 2 consecutive days in a period of 2 consecutive work weeks, and so on up to 4 consecutive days in a period of 4 consecutive work weeks. After 24 consecutive workdays, an employee is entitled to at least 4 days of rest. Unless your management team are complete morons, there must be a reason they are saying this. Union or not, a vital machine breaking down unexpectedly causes unplanned delays and supply issues. It could mean your company would lose contracts and thus causing layoffs.

Please review the following rules before commenting further: Automotive industry here, if our employer claims emergency status, they have the right to force up to 90 straight days of production, but only once per contract period(4 yrs) as was agreed to by the union and signed off on by its members. It comes down to your contract. At my shop they can do that but you get 1.5x pay up to 8 hrs past 40 and 2x pay after that. Check your collective bargaining agreement (not giving you access to it is probably no no in it too) and check state law. I know NY they can only do 6 days in a row. The company/union is required to make sure you get a copy of your contract. Somebody has a digital copy they can print for you and I would ask HR to do so. It won’t be a neat little booklet, but it will do the job.
