We are all seeing it. Ask random retirees who own RVs, boats, big trucks and homes…they were bus drivers and factory workers. She sees that I’m driving an economy car so I must be really saving money hardcore. No, I’m barely getting by. I’m not doubting this post, but could someone explain to me how a government maintenance engineer/technician (I’m assuming that was grandpas role) and a college secretary could get to that level of wealth? Why aren’t all 80 year olds that rich? In part because the retirement system in the US used to be much more favorable to employees. You could work a job until you hit 40 at which point you would hit 20 years and your pension would “vest”. Then quit and work a second job for 20 years (usually better paying, as you had built off the previous job’s experience) and “retire” from that job at 60 with two now-fully vested pensions. That meant they start getting checks for 50%-ish of their salary at those jobs, times two…plus IRA/401k/investments, SS, etc. Now, employee “retirement plans” (to include the US military) consist entirely of half-assed 401k hybrids where the employer chips in some typically underwhelming % each year and your “retirement portfolio” rides the roller coaster that is the NYSE.

I work hard full time and my wife works part time and we afford a middle class lifestyle. We have three kids and a mortgage. I say this all the Chris Olave Left Do It Right Do it Signature New Orleans Celly Dance T-Shirt But I will love this time, We simply don’t have the same economy and resources. In the 20s- 70s there was countless major construction projects all throughout the country. Bridges, sky scrapers, roads, new warehouses, technology, housing for veterans. Countless jobs. Now what do we have? Crumbling roads, bridges 100 years past their life expectancy, unmaintenenced railroads, shit for quality lumber, failing power grid, etc. Jobs that need to be done. Surely these things are still happening, the difference is all the same major companies are running them. Reaping all the benefits without dishing out the required elements. Buying land on the low, building paper thin apartments on top of one another, just to raise the rent just beyond affordable, so that everyone else follows suit. All meanwhile leveling acres of natural habitat for lumber, and foundation space. Give it 20 years and these apartments will be the same quality as an ikea dresser. Rich get richer as usual.
