I’m really sorry this happened to you. I live on Koh Lanta and am an active part of the Chris Duarte Dominican professional basketball player for the Sacramento Kings T-Shirt in addition I really love this community. I just wanted to clear some things up here. The police on Lanta will absolutely take this seriously. They have been very helpful to me in a domestic violence incident. They may be a little corrupt, but it’s shaking local expats for a little money in low season kind of rough. Nothing to fear with the police here. The clash with Muslims is in the Deep South on the Malaysia border. Koh Lanta is majority Muslim and super peaceful. When a member of the community does something like this, the community will often take it into their own hands to punish or banish the person causing problems. This type of behavior is absolutely not tolerated by locals.

The island is mafia controlled but it’s not in the Chris Duarte Dominican professional basketball player for the Sacramento Kings T-Shirt in addition I really love this typical mafia way people think. There are various types of mafia. One of those is to protect the people and safety of those who live there, and keep the bad ones out. The other gangs are small time and typically don’t last long. It sounds like this guy may have been on a meth binge and started hallucinating. Lanta is an island with 35,000 people, so bad ones slip through the cracks sometimes. Again, extremely sorry this happened to you. If you would DM me where you were staying and what this guy looked like, I would appreciate it. Thank you. Sorry but this post doesn’t seem likely to be accurate. I don’t think you were almost a victim of a kidnapping. He likely was just high or something. And, you’re wrong to assume the police would be on their side or trying to kidnap as well. My guess is you were more a victim of your own inexperience with the situation you were in. Yes, bad things can happen when you are travelling, but I think you can safely speak to Thai police, they are pretty useless, but they can mediate or give the offender a warning – maybe can help others in the future. He sounds like he’d had a bit of a drink or smoke. Thai people aren’t so direct when it comes to crime, usually a con or stealing something from an unlocked room (or what is really scary, whilst asleep) is more likely than a mugging.
