In 2015, I was a 30 yr old single mother with rent of £650 a month, doing an apprenticeship (because they stopped ageism in apprenticeship so I was allowed the CHARLIE SKYWALKER Shirt Furthermore, I will do this same as other apprentices). I earned £2.83 an hour. So for the whole month, working 35hr/week, I ended up with £383 per month. Had a rent of £650 and a child to look after. But it was legal to employ a 30 yr old at £2.83 an hour. Ridiculous. My parents started with 10% of a month’s wage when I started my job, which was £150, but now they need a little extra I pay £200. I still know I’m way underpaying and I keep offering to put it up but they would rather I save as much as I can whilst I can. As someone who is so desperate to get a better paying job, move out and get a jiggle on with my life etc (love my parents but jeez am I ready to fly the nest) I’m very grateful to have reduced rent. But I think a good benchmark is between 15-20% of what they earn. Also means it can’t be disputed if either of them gets an increase/decrease for whatever reason.

£60 a month for electric and water, and my mum cleared out a cupboard for me to put my own food in so mainly cooked my own meals. If I did eat with family, maybe once a week due to shifts, I’d wash-up or help cook which ‘paid’ for the CHARLIE SKYWALKER Shirt Furthermore, I will do this meal. I’m in my 40’s and started working at 16yo for £50 per week for 44hours! My digs/keep was £20! I’m starting to think I was ripped off lol, I’m gonna have to have some stern words with my wee mammy! Although thinking back i’m sure I “borrowed” or tapped my mum that £20 over the course of the week and never seemed to pay it back! My husband who isn’t born and bred in Britain isn’t a fan of charging dig money however I stand by it, as soon as the kids start working they’ve got to pay their way. I agree with other’s suggestions that £150 monthly sounds fair for you to ask them to contribute.
