Happy to say, we are now under contract on a home that we got for 50% of what our initial budget was and we didn’t compromise on location. The financial flexibility to save, go on vacation, add equity into the Charlie Brown and Snoopy go Montreal Canadiens shirt moreover I will buy this home by renovating some rooms, have kids…. it’s liberating. BTW, our lender approved us for 1.9x the higher budget we initially set for ourselves. DO NOT let them convince you that you can afford more than you and your wife think you can. Just have to say though, in my area, $1.4M will get you either an older actual mansion or new McMansion on, like, maybe an acre. Why are they doing that to you?? I do that for fun but in no way would I purposely send expensive houses out of our range to my husband while we’re house searching….. petty me would ask her “beautiful house…. If only we could find the 400k extra to put to it do you have it??”

This infuriates me, and I have had to set a hard limit with my husband over this same problem. It makes the Charlie Brown and Snoopy go Montreal Canadiens shirt moreover I will buy this homes in your actual price range seem sad in comparison. I refuse to look at or discuss anything over our price range. It’s the only way I can stay sane with these outrageous prices. Its not just the cost of the house, though. The more affluent neighbors are going to have nicer furniture, newer cars, nicer clothes, more exotic vacations, more expensive hobbies, tutors for the kids, and so on. Lots of those neighborhoods have HOA, too. I’d much rather have a modest house and a nice life than struggle to keep up with the Joneses. In paper it a white board. Seeing it in paper paints a clear picture. Numbers don’t lie. Her hopes and dreams won’t change the numbers. Help her understand the math. She is clearly trying to manipulate you. Get her to understand where your number is coming from. Also, the fun fact about losing your home is when you lose it, you also lose all your equity. You also no longer have a good credit score. Therefore it is really important you are never in a situation to lose your home.
