Most first year essays are worse than ChatGPT. Though most first-year essays are also barely readable in any context. I think people underestimate how bad they are on average. She once showed me an essay a student wrote. I kid you not, the page she showed me had words, and each sentence in of itself made sense…but all together, it was a page of nothing. An entire page that was nothing but meaningless filler. It was honestly impressive. Wouldn’t that make it stand out even more? LLM-generated text has a particularly verbose, explanatory way of writing that doesn’t really work for an essay, let alone a first-year one. I don’t get LAOP. If their friend was better at writing essays, just write one yourself and have the friend help you go through it to improve it.
