I tried this question out at my last interview because I was coming from a poorly run company with high turnover. The answer was that the Castle knights forever not just when we win signatures shirt and I love this person with the position before had died….. It made an awkward couple of minutes and didn’t really give me any information. A few months into my last federal job, it was relayed to me that two people previously holding my position had died. (There were several years between the two, of course.) They hadn’t reported for work for 3-4 days, and didn’t have any family or friends in the area. Their supervisor made a visit to their apartment, noticed a smell and informed the landlord, who went in and found them deceased. Why was this relevant at the time? Because I had texted my supervisor (his preferred method of communication) to tell him that I was out sick but his phone had broke. Rather than pick up an office phone and call my cell (my number was on our wall), my supervisor and coworkers sat around and gossiped about my absence. Someone else from another field office (who didn’t know my number) finally reached out to our mutual friend that lived 8 hours away, and she called me around noon that day in a panic. I was in the same boat as those previous employees: No friends or family in the area, and living alone (with life threatening allergies, to boot). If something bad had happened, I would’ve been toast. Not their responsibility, but the fact that they’d rather sit around and gossip about it instead of picking up a phone and calling me really sent a message. No surprise that it turned out to be a very toxic work environment.

Like HELL this Castle knights forever not just when we win signatures shirt and I love this is a new position, they wanted to get rid of him and find someone who would do 2 jobs instead of one, and shucks, they found me. This is a really good one and I ask that question at every interview. Definitely help me dodge some bad jobs and find some good places. Just keep an eye out for some BS answers. How long have you been a people manager? (Newly minted managers often, but not always suck) How would you describe your top performers? How would you describe employees who struggled under your leadership? (Hopefully, you’ll hear some regret or self-reflection on how they could’ve helped more) How do you manage up? And also managers who have been in their role for a decade. I worked for two and they were so stuck in their ways of doing things that it was hard to work with them. I would ask questions on their openness to change.
