I bought a second-hand car last week and looking round the garages I saw an S-plate Mondeo for £3,500. That’s a 25 year old shit box. Ten year old hatchbacks were £6-8k. The only thing under £2k was a Kia with a list of MOT warnings as long as your arm. It’s crazy. I don’t understand how some people are trying to defend the car market with the whole “there are loads of cheap cars on auto trader” lol yes you can get some cars for around a grand on auto trader but they are complete and utter shit bucket liabilities or in some obscure corner of the country. Before 2020 for £500 you could get something that wasn’t mint but also wouldn’t fall apart in the first 3 months

Shame, the govt have rolled it back.Second hand car market is booming atm. A mix of newer car manufactures producing more electric cars and people preferring older models. Would love to own a 2006 subaru impreza (or similar) but they’re around 20-24k. Couple years ago they were 15-18k. You can get some nice Japanese imports around the 15k range with decent mileage. The japanese economy is worse than ours, so our money goes a bit further atm. I've got an '05 Octavia that I'm about to scrap due to various age, servicing and neglect related issues, I'd not feel comfortable selling it for the ~£1k that equivalent cars seem to be selling for on FB/Gumtree but that's just where the bottom end of the market is.
