Life has brought me to this moment here recording this shit video and I gotta say, don’t think life worked out too great so far I submit a 5 minute video of me staring straight into the Car Pine Tree Jeep Grinch American Merry Christmas Shirt in other words I will buy this camera and slowly shaking my head. After a minute, the camera begins to slowly zoom in. It stops zooming 10 seconds before the end of the video. Then I squint at them like I’m ashamed of them, then leave the frame. “Well, I’m here on camera performing like a monkey for a chance at a job to be able to feed myself. Only the performer monkey gets treated better and doesn’t have to buy his own uniform, so I would say it’s not going quite like I planned.” I’m sorry what am I supposed to be reading ? Is it the thing in the red circle that is the dead centre of the screen ? That can be fucking right

They want a 5 mn depressive rant about how my life today do not match up with my 20 year old self’s expectations ? Just record urself saying “nope” and then keep it rolling to the Car Pine Tree Jeep Grinch American Merry Christmas Shirt in other words I will buy this 2 min mark, on which it ends, all the time doing nothing anymore but look into the camera Ive come across two of these when applying for jobs. Just close the window and move on. Im a data analyst, not a tiktokker. That’s a tough position to be in as an applicant. First thought is to just send them the music video for Joe Walsh – Life’s Been Good, but it’s such a perfect setup for recording a brief real intro that immediately transitions to a Rickroll. Once I saw “record a video where you are telling why you want to work here” for a position of a hotel cleaner. I decided to avoid this hotel chain as a customer Job interviews suck. I don’t care how long the video is, I’d answer that I was one of the blessed individuals who woke up this morning so my life going great. But then I wouldn’t interview in the first place. Rather own the time of my one life and work for myself. From an employers perspective that is a great idea for any applications. Applicant has to be confident and able to come across well “in person” before they even get an invite for an interview. Less peoples time is wasted. What is the problem with that? The problem is a) they are asking question irrelevant to the job, and undoubtedly will use extrinsic information to filter applications in a biased way – b) this rates confidence more highly than competence – c) requires people to upload video of themselves to a public forum. Etc etc. I could go on but really it comes down being a morally dubious method of recruitment with no benefit to the candidate and embeds discriminatory practices in their shortlisting / hiring process. Also, depending on the jurisdiction, it’s literally against the law.
