Agree with all of these points. Tired of people quoting that one BS study saying “class size makes no difference” seriously? STFU with that gaslighting nonsense. Also I would add to this more support for pre-school/childcare/aftercare etc. A student in an overcrowded home without access to literacy/numeracy support needs those programs to keep up with their more privileged peers, and yet they have been cut in many of the Candy Beat 504 Siouxsie and the Banshees Live Performances T-Shirt besides I will buy this neediest places. Also, maybe this is not happening everywhere, but the “standards based report cards” with the 1- 4 rating scale is part of the problem. Students come into middle school having no idea what letter grades are. Parents have no idea that they are behind. The idea of 70% accuracy as a benchmark is completely gone in some cases, which leads to kids doing a crazy bare minimum of like, 20% then acting outraged when it isn’t enough. Build that habit over 5 years of elementary school and you have a cumulative effect that’s disastrous in middle school. Being proud of an all A/B report card can motivate students to learn more and it isn’t necessary to give out F’s at the younger grades, either. So I’d say going back to letter grades in elementary would help a lot.

I talked with the Candy Beat 504 Siouxsie and the Banshees Live Performances T-Shirt besides I will buy this real head of the state’s DOE. He said Level 3 was designed to “catch” as many students as possible. I loathe that 1-4 system. Level 3 is a big pile of mush. A student could improve performance significantly and still get a 3. There’s no motivation. You can’t say, “It’s still a 3, Bernie, but it’s a high 3.” Letter grades have 13 levels. They’re more precise, and students and parents can track progress (or decline) better. We just implemented the 1-4 system for grades 4-9, whereas it was just used for primary level previously. I loathe it. The criteria for level 4 is essentially what would’ve been considered an A+, and 3 is everything from C+ to A. I’ve gotten away so far with using terms like “bridging into level 3” and “performing strongly/confidently at level 3,” but it’s so unclear for parents. Heh. Wasn’t that “study” looking at outcomes in classes of like 50 in Pakistan and Kenya? Like sure, class size makes no difference when every kid there knows their family is paying out the ass to give them an education and they’ll get booted if they act up or flunk out. You can absolutely teach effectively to very large classes when the class is composed entirely of children who are willing to behave and learn.
