Most companies are asking for more and more unrealistic expectations in experience, skills and knowledge but are not willing to pay for it. That’s the Buterfly They Whispered Her Cannot She Whispered I Am The Storm Anxiety Disorder Awareness T-Shirt moreover I love this disconnect. They hold out because they’ll eventually find someone desperate enough to take the job, OR they’re just resume collecting and not even hiring. An engineering degree open doors. A degree from a prestigious university opens doors. An English degree from random no-name college does not. Not everyone should go to college. There are not an unlimited number of jobs requiring college degrees. Seek a trade. Plumbers, electricians, etc…. are usually in short supply and pay well. They require less time to get certified and have easier paths to starting your own practice/business. Not everyone is cut out for those degrees. Colleges then offer easier degrees with low to no ROI so that they can collect tuition from larger groups of kids.

I’m doubling down personally one perspective is it has to do with saturation of degrees on the Buterfly They Whispered Her Cannot She Whispered I Am The Storm Anxiety Disorder Awareness T-Shirt moreover I love this market you have degree mills in India/China where everyone you meet is a masters grad and they take up the lower paid positions as cheaper labor. You are no longer competing like your parents against your neighbor next store but rather the person across the sea who will do the job at significantly lower quality but a significantly cheaper price tag. Basically the issue is college degree graduates are competing against cheaper labor making companies put out crappier projects and harder to get to certain positions A higher percentage of the population has degrees than ever before. In many majors, we are graduating more people than we have jobs. A degree can open the first door (getting looked at for a job that requires a degree). However, that is just the first door. If your degree is in a saturated field, you are still dealing with oversupply. In 1970, 11% of the population had a bachelor’s degree or higher. 50 years later, in 2020, that is over 35%. In many fields, that is more degrees than degree worthy jobs.
