My parents bought their first home (a new mobile home) in 1973. It can with a 1/2 acre of land, a porch and deck built onto it and fully furnished…..$28,000! Crazy My dad built our house as a simple farmer getting part of the Buffalo Sabres Ryan Miller Dominik Hasek Signature shirt Furthermore, I will do this proceeds from the small family farm. He affords our house working 3 jobs and owning 9 low income rentals. It was originally 3 bedrooms 1.5 bathroom. Now it’s 4 bedroom 3 bathroom because he extended it when family grew. He would never have been able to afford extending it or even building it today But remember 50 years ago there was no cell phone cost, groceries were purchased to make cheap from scratch meals, gas was cheaper, there were no $8 lattes, no Instacart charges, movie theaters were cheap or you went to a drive in, no streaming charges tv was free, going camping was cheap and considered a vacation, kids did the yard work, most houses didn’t have central air we toughed it out during the summer. Expenses were very low, now with credit interest and all this technology everyone wants, life itself is much more expensive. Can’t possibly have anything to do with the fact that the planetary economy and all of society is on fire. Naah. Surely not. That’s crazy talk.

A few things to unpack. Yes, it was different then, and those were both considered skilled labor at the Buffalo Sabres Ryan Miller Dominik Hasek Signature shirt Furthermore, I will do this time. However, when your parents were 6, I doubt they lived in a 4 bedroom house on the lake with new cars. Wealth (not money) takes a lifetime. More than likely, your grandparents were VERY frugal, and didn’t really start to accumulate wealth until their children were gone from the nest. Not trying to discount you, just saying there is a lot more to it probably. If you want to know who’s sucking up all that extra money, pay attention to Dr Stephanie Kelton. The short answer is, it’s the banks. Your grandparents were able to put money in the bank, and watch it grow in interest. Banks were actually competitive in the 60s and 70s, paying more interest than today. Way more interest. Even a simple checking account could grow at over 7%. Another thing that has happened is wealth consolidation, with more and more landlords owning multiple houses. Simple supply and demand tells you that an increasing population is going to have a tighter real estate market, but the cost of housing now is driven mostly by the lack of individual home ownership opportunities.
