Marlin ISD, which is tiny, is a hot mess, which hasn’t been helped by nearby ISDs running buses into town to pick up the better students. (There’s not much there there in Marlin. Some of my family used to live there.) According to the NPR article, students said the absences also extended to teachers. 99% of the students are also economically disadvantaged. Even as far back in time I finished high school (1969) I had experienced four years of high school, four schools in three states (one was correspondence in a state I passed though more than twenty years later) and two countries and I always had classmates that were just coasting. Unmotivated students are nothing new. Crappy schools trying for the minimum are nothing new. Do think it is cute that is in Texas…the state that likes to compete with a few others at being NUMBER ONE…at the bottom! Laws have changed. In the 60s you could just drop out. Leaving only the students who want to be there. Now it’s much more difficult to remove a kid from the roster, leaving a bunch of no-good-niks on the roster.

I have a family member that is enrolled in special Ed but I don’t think he belongs there. He just isn’t motivated, and why should he be? He will get passed so long as he has a heart beat in the class. When he doesn’t do homework, instead of telling the parents, they just pull him out of regular classes into the sped room to make it up — which in turn puts him farther and farther behind on subjects he’s actually really good at. He might be correct. In fact I bet he is. The problem that school has to deal with most likely does not originates in the schools, and is likely beyond the school’s capacity to address.
