Not everyone’s Boss makes more. I’ve at various points made more than 3 of my last 4 bosses while working for them. Not every company is “management” = paid more than individual contributors. This is even true in restaurants when I made more as a bartender than the Brilliant Mind Ninja Scientists T-Shirt but in fact I love this assistant managers. I don’t know if you even have a family, but I bet he says the same shit to people who don’t have one and still struggle… I had a boss tell me that because I was single and didn’t have a family he paid me less than those who did because they needed the money more. Even people who had been there for a shorter period of time or didn’t meet my level of productivity or experience. I found a new job. Discrimination against someone being unmarried may be possible in some states with very small companies where federal law is limited

SirGlenn: Not to myself, but I’ve been in several jobs where the Brilliant Mind Ninja Scientists T-Shirt but in fact I love this boss pretty much says the same thing. And like your office, they quit. I’d say, “well you know this job doesn’t do that for me. So I will be taking my 25% raise to make sure I can do that in the future. Then walk out of his office.” “Yeah bro, I’m looking for enough money to live and provide sustenance to my family. Once I get to that point maybe I’ll try your suggestion” that’s funny, as I got older, I realized I should never work a job that makes me dread getting up every day and two weeks notice is overrated Ok, time for serious talk. Who am I? I’ve been in a corporate/career job for nearly 30 years. I finally quit, started my own business, and doing better than I ever have. With that background established, please understand the following: No matter what your boss or HR says, no matter what you’re told in the hiring interview, the company does NOT give a damn about you, your financial well-being, or your family. They care about the bottom line. Nothing more. You need to stop expecting your boss/manager/HR to care about you. With that understanding, you need to treat your employment as such. You’re there to exchange labor for money. You’re not family. You’re not a team. You’re not a crew. You’re an individual there to exchange labor for money. Everything else is mind games. EVERY benefit you are offered you NEED to utilize. NEVER let PTO or vacation time go unused. “But we’ll be shorthanded that month if you go.” Not your problem. Give ample notice of your planned time off. Give it in writing. Ask for confirmation in writing.
