Digital machines make it even less convenient to opt-out with the automated tip function. I like to be discreet with a gratuity, not have a barista stare at me as I struggle to decide if my coffee (that hasn’t been poured yet!) is worth 18, 20 or a 25% tip. If I don’t sit down, I don’t leave a tip but finding the 0% option is a frustrating exercise. I’m a Canadian living in New Zealand, and a lot of the cheaper flights to get to and from Canada go through the US. But US customs are hell on earth and should be avoided if possible.

Thankfully, I’m able to fly direct from Auckland to Vancouver this year. There are also a ton of direct flights from Toronto and Montreal. I’ve flown from Montreal to Reykjavik and Lima, and from Toronto to San Salvador, Lisbon, London, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Cancun, and Vienna.
