I took the complimentary shuttle to the hotel and the driver decided to help me with my luggage (which was not expected because this was done by ourselves in Hong Kong, mainland, and other US airports I have flown into), the driver expected a tip in the end after arrival (judging by the fact that everyone was tipping). Now, at this point in time, I essentially did not have any cash in USD on me because I thought I had already paid for everything via credit card ahead of time. For the driver who took me to the hotel, I just gave him all the Chinese currency I had in cash which was more than 8 dollars after conversion but for the other driver I only had quarters (a bit more than 1 dollar I think) in USD. The guy appeared to be agitated after I gave him all the coins I have and I had to tell him that I had no cash on me.

Or is there a way to refuse the service where the driver expects a tip? Or do those service providers usually accept venmo or cashapp?”Sorry I don’t have any cash” I just don’t tip (what else can I do?), but yes it’s a good lesson to always have cash on you in the USA. Everyone is always expecting a tip, even if they’re just doing the job you’ve already paid them to do. I remember arriving once and taking a hotel shuttle to my hotel (part of what I paid for when I purchased the room) and didn’t tip the driver. He cursed at me as I was leaving the shuttle.. Who cares they’re expecting a tip. It’s not mandatory, it’s their problem, not yours. Don’t allow others to pressure you into doing something you don’t want to do.
