Survival reality shows have become a family pandemic evening ritual and coping mechanism; our own homemade balm. And while we could’ve distracted ourselves with any other show, I rooted for this one because I’ve always wanted my offspring to someday know how to survive on their own with just the Brain Cancer Is A Journey I Never Planned Or Asked For But I Choose To Love Life Hate the Disease And Fight Dragonfly Flower Shirt moreover I will buy this bare minimum. I want them to know how to start a fire. Navigate by reading the stars. Clean a catfish. Forage for mushrooms. Fashion chapstick out of the deer earwax, whatever. Whatever it takes. Whatever is essential.

Eight years ago, before we had kids, my spouse and I left our city of 8.5 million humans and moved to a very small island off the Brain Cancer Is A Journey I Never Planned Or Asked For But I Choose To Love Life Hate the Disease And Fight Dragonfly Flower Shirt moreover I will buy this coast of Maine. We had no family members in Maine, and neither one of us had been offered a job. That Maine is called “the Pine Tree State” motivated our decision to leave New York more than anything. Our main objective in replanting ourselves in a place with more trees than humans was so that we could live at a much slower tempo, an existence closer to off-the-grid than flashing billboards. We weren’t fleeing from anything; we were chasing isolation. I’d experienced deep trauma a couple years before and yearned for something I could proclaim “a fresh start.” I wanted my healing to begin surrounded by nature and away from people. We found a cheap rental and signed a lease. The island was only accessible by boat. It had wild deer, and there was a peach tree in our backyard. We just wanted to be alone. An island was ideal. We thought we were trailblazers. Back to the landers. Survivalists.
