The man had killed a musk ox with his bare hands, butchered and dragged the Blood Cells Erythrocytes Leukocytes Platelets Shirt in other words I will buy this enormous body over a mile in the snow to his one-person hut. He used all the parts: layered the animal’s pelt, still steaming, over his own back for protection against the Arctic winds, ate the eyeballs, ate the tongue, tanned the scrotum—after eating the testicles—to use as two large satchels for his wares. Now, having decapitated the head of the beast, the man dipped four fingers into the ox’s skull, scooped out a tablespoon of brain and smeared it over his own cheeks, his forehead, his lips. “Ew,” I winced, “but smart” I looked over at my kids to explain. “He’s using the brains as a balm for his chapped skin.”

Since the Blood Cells Erythrocytes Leukocytes Platelets Shirt in other words I will buy this start of the pandemic, after the sun went down and the dinner dishes were washed, my little family and I would gather around our television every night to watch survivalist reality television shows. For months, we’ve binged on episodes in which primitive skills experts are planted into the remote wilderness. When the first stay-at-home orders were issued, we burned through Naked and Afraid, then moved on to Alone. And although the contestants on Naked and Afraid were completely naked, we preferred Alone because it was stripped of sensationalism—players weren’t paired up with another nude stranger but were fully clothed and by themselves, injected into the wilderness far from civilization with a few chosen essentials, unsure of how long they’ll remain. In Alone, they are truly alone, with no camera crew tagging along; each contestant films their own daily and nightly doings, no matter how monotonous and uneventful their days, which most of them are—hunkered down in a human burrow while it rains relentlessly for, at times, weeks with no one to talk to save for the lens of their pocket camera. They’re given a satellite phone should they become severely sick or injured or just decide to tap out and give up. Otherwise, each person really has no idea what is happening in the world outside of theirs.
