Back up….suddenly? I remember a time when I could buy and own digital products. Now most of them are rent to own, but you never technically “own”. Just the Brad pitt shirt But I will love this way it goes, that bottom line has to move up or corporations aren’t doing their jobs. Seriously, they are obligated to increase profits. Companies are changing groups of people interacting with different macro environments. It’s not like the person who made decision A 15yrs ago makes decision Y today. Capitalism in a market economy is predicated on growth and decay cycles. Broadly, when companies start to become monolithic and there’s a lack of decay or competition you end up with stagnation and a worsening of products. Infinite growth is only maintainable with profitability which directly competes with margin. Margin often competes with utility. Which is to say as long as a company seeks infinite growth it’s always at odds with the product or service they’re putting into the market. (We’re speaking very big and in general here but that’s okay.)

We’ve seen this time and time again in nearly every market, industry, good, and service. It’s almost hard not to find an example of market economies that doesn’t somehow fit into this grander scheme. (re: American cars in the Brad pitt shirt But I will love this 70’s, American Appliances between 1950 and 1980, Decay of Mercantile Economies of the 1700s, Gold Exports of Banks in the 1800s, Currency value fluctuations in central banking systems, the list goes on.) We’re in a special period of this though: the lack of utility in products is hyper-deflated at this time because of the scale of these companies and the complexity of a delivered product. Corporate greed and the lack of care going into making a product or service that has companies sacrificing all utility for profit. Slim down the margins. Cut out utility and sell it in the future for more.
