The chicken stays cold enough to keep bacteria growth down “dethaw” is a word (according to dictionary.com). It means to become soft or liquid. It’s a synonym to the word “thaw”. I would suggest leaving it in a tub of cold water (while inside a ziplock bag of sorts) rather than leaving it out on the counter

It defrosts so slowly in the fridge. My cat prevention technique though is to put it in the oven or microwave instead of messing around with a contraption like this. The only approved methods of defrosting are microwave, fridge, or running cold water continuously through a container. My whole family for generations has defrosted chicken on the counter. I had no idea it was so dangerous. But after reading your comment it makes perfect sense. My wife treats chicken like a biohazard when we bring it in the house, but we saw it out on the countertop. What the fuck is wrong with us.
