I don’t know stats honestly but it really seems like the Bone Thugs N Harmony Fire shirt in other words I will buy this majority of parents I know, purely anecdotally, have way more kids than they ever could’ve dreamed of providing for really well, financially. Supporting their kids beyond the minimum has probably literally always been a question of, “support you? I’ve been gasping for air against the waves for 18 years.” Same. We have a multi-gen home and we plan to keep it that way. We were raised without a village so we made one ourselves. 🙂 It’s absurd to think that we should be able to afford a one bedroom apartment? A tiny living space? Hard disagree. Even with inflation I’m still able to make it work, thankfully. Love the peace in living alone. Edit: I feel really bad for you people for just accepting that things should be this way. You know one salary could pay for a family of four and home ownership not too long ago? Now it shouldn’t even allow you to rent a room with a fridge, shower, and toilet, eh? Masochists I guess. It is SO sad to see people accepting the new, WORSE living conditions of this modern economy as the new normal and thinking nothing is wrong when the future is worse than the past… Only if you had a very good job, which is still the case today. Look up the historical home ownership rate, and you’ll see it’s been basically the same for the past 70 years, and before then it was significantly lower. How is that possible if everything was so much more affordable in the past? There’s simply never been a period in history where home ownership was affordable for everyone. source As a side note, the old homes weren’t very glamorous. If you look up the sq footage on these old homes, you may be surprised. For example, that family of 4 in 1950 likely had a 950 sq ft house, which was the average home size that year. That is about the same size of today’s apartments/condos that you called “tiny living spaces” for only 1 person. So the reality is much closer to: a family of 4 could maybe afford a condo on 1 income, if they made a good salary.

I wonder if a lot of these comments are attributed to the Bone Thugs N Harmony Fire shirt in other words I will buy this idea of the 50s-70s propagated by movies & TV vs. the actual reality. I grew up in a average middle class house in the 80s/90s and both my parents had very good careers and worked full time. Their parents were both duel income households and good careers as well, living in more modest homes, for example. That seemed the norm around me. It’s been repeated so many times by people pushing agendas, most people just accept the fairytale as fact. “Life is hard and unfair” sells. “Life has always been very tough, but it’s statistically marginally better today” isn’t as gripping. Yeah, it’s definitely some weird media perception. Most people’s mothers worked. Most people’s grandmothers worked. Heck, my one grandmother primary caregiver as a child was her blind uncle, because both of her parents worked.
