See if there’s anything in your contract or in your labor laws you can use as a leverage. It’s not uncommon to have some degree of separation between people managers and other workers and changing form one role and the Bob Ross painting space and galaxy shirt in other words I will buy this other requires adjustments. If you find out you have said leverage, you can either bring it immediately to table or wait some time, make sure they get cozy with their new underpaid manager and then show up really meekly saying that you’re really sorry, but you found out that they have to update your contract accordingly because what they’re doing is currently illegal… They may be about to restructure, and since you’re reporting to someone that doesn’t know you or your team…well you can guess which team is getting the boot. This happened to my team at a major retailers corporate office.

Comfortable is not a good measure. You should ask for time-frames and KPIs to meet. They need to define success so you can know if you are fulfilling the Bob Ross painting space and galaxy shirt in other words I will buy this role properly. If they weren’t comfortable with you having the position they wouldn’t give you the position. And the position comes with a salary. If you’re doing the work, they need to pay you the salary from day one. I’ve seen in my own company where they say they want to see how you do without pay increase while they are interviewing others for the position. So they don’t have to pay for the extra labor but you actually don’t get the job after all the hard work put in. I personally wouldn’t accept anything less than at least a cursory pay bump straight away with a written agreement to review the pay/ position after 3 or 6 months
