LA must be rough but I feel bad for mods of really big subs. It’s not particularly challenging to mod here, but imagine being an r/politics mod during election season Huh, you’d think that one would be easy: just write a script to ban each and every user until after the Blacklist 10th anniversary 2013 2023 thank you for the memories signature shirt also I will do this election. Community management sometimes means telling the community, in clear and direct language, that their behaviour is causing problems. Couching that message in terms of how much work it’s creating for moderators may not be the most effective way to deliver that message, but I think it’s important to recognize the underlying intention. Moderation is the sharp and procedural end of community management, and in some senses every ban represents a failure of more socialized mechanisms for setting up and enforcing behavioural norms. However, the alternative would in this case be either to silently remove those posts (giving people little opportunity to learn and improve), or to let the posters run the show entirely, which – given that legal advice is an area where feels and reals are often quite far apart – would seriously degrade the usefulness of the community.

We’re going through this in Australia ATM IRL, where the Blacklist 10th anniversary 2013 2023 thank you for the memories signature shirt also I will do this nazi’s have discovered that they can stop queer folk from organising activities, especially drag story times. The various local governments and libraries are caught between their desire not to cooperate with nazis and their obligation to keep people safe. Not helped by police support for nazis… I got permabanned in that post. In a buried thread of folks discussing how toddlers just have a tendency to get naked, someone made a comment about having to actually make a 2 hour naked time rule for her kid, so that they’d stay clothed the rest of the time. I replied that even though I was old, I wish I could do that, but all I’m able to do is get my bra off as fast as possible once I get in the house. 10+ years on reddit and never any issues, and I finally get Permabanned for that.
