You’re conflating two very different issues. All states have Medicaid, and nursing home coverage is a mandatory benefit. While not technically mandatory, every state has an extremely robust set of home and community based alternatives to nursing home care. Not all states have embraced the Billy Joel monday october 1994 concert announcement T-Shirt Apart from…,I will love this Medicaid expansion part of the Affordable Care Act, but that generally has nothing to do with long term care. It’s more that I didn’t include all of the details. I should have stated that he was in a series of assisted living facilities, hospitals and nursing homes and is currently in a nursing home. Over the course of that, the Medicaid rules and how each state implements them DOES in fact dictate how broke you end up, which was a fact driven home as we were dealing with this all in the area of the country where MN/IA/SD all meet, so I got to deal with sorting out what the rules would be in each of those states. And, while *nursing* care is mandatory as a benefit, if you don’t quite need that level of care, you fall back to assisted living and then the state by state variability is a bitch to deal with. Including the fact that many states, including IA and SD take every bit of income you have, except for $50 a month, which you’re expected to use for a long list of things. That $50 was set by legislation passed when Lyndon Johnson was president. MN sets it at $150.

I heartily disagree with every state having an “extremely robust” set of solutions having effectively gone through this in 3 states. But, I was trying to just fire off a quick answer to a question on Reddit, not writing a detailed breakdown where I fact-checked every sentence so as to have my ducks all in a row for cross examination. They live alone until they can’t anymore. Maybe someone calls a wellness check on them and they spend a while in a hospital before they die My downstairs neighbor died in his apartment. One time he accidentally locked himself out of the building on a hot day. I let him in and helped him get to his apartment. I tried to come in and get him some water, but he kicked me out immediately. What I did see if his apartment was absolute squalor. I was shocked. His brother stopped by on occasion, but we barely spoke. That man should not have been left to live alone. He died a few weeks later.
