Reaearchers studied a range of brushing times and found that after 2 minutes the subjects were not removing nearly as much plaque as before. They further concluded that the difference between a 45 second brushing and a 2 minute brushing was severe enough that it would impact dental health. So the two minutes thing has been studied and is not arbitrary. Here’s why it’s not a hard and fast rule though, brushing goes a long way but there is more to good dental hygiene. If you go to the dentist every 6 months for a cleaning, don’t get regular cavities, floss regularly and don’t smoke you probably don’t really need to brush the whole 2 minutes. For the rest of us, two minutes on the electric brush is the way to go.
