I know I’m fairly new to driving so I’m now wondering what other kinds of hand-breaks there are! Hate that sound it makes. It just doesn’t sound normal. Like gears grinding. My wife doesn’t though. I always comment “that poor hand brake” whenever I’m in her car. Edit. Actually thinking about it I think I push the button in half way so I can feel the notches but not annoyingly noisy

I have never considered that you wouldn’t press the Best durrant Scottish professional football coach and former player RANGERS T-Shirt In addition,I will do this button, and never noticed anyone I’ve been in a car with not pressing the button. I think if you’re doing a handbrake turn you have to press the button to apply the brakes quickly enough. I’ve got an e-brake now so that’s all irrelevant. In the USA it is known as the “emergency brake” and is only really meant to be used when the service brake fails and the driver needs to stop the car. They are instructed to pull, hard, and to let it lock as the purpose is to stop the car as quickly as feasible. In the UK with your “hand brake” I think you can use it any way that you like. Just be aware, if it’s not put fully back down then you will wear out your rear drums or start a fire when you resume driving. I hold the button. It’s what Pete the driving instructor showed me on my first lesson and I’ve never been brave enough to go against the Word of Pete.
