I’ll die on this hill that classes need to be stopped and really teachers really need to be strict on “no pass go” benchmarks bc there are too many holes in the Best columbus Blue Jackets Mitchell & Ness Gray Popsicle Shirt But I will love this basics. Ya, we shouldn’t be going over comma rules and similes in 9th grade, but fuck, if we have to, that’s what we’re gonna do. A colleague of mine brought up and is going to try things from “The Writing Revolution” by Judith C Hochman and Natalie Wexler. I have glanced at the book but didn’t have the time to dive deep (this was literally yesterday about 10 minutes before school started). My colleague says the aim of the book is to build writing into the content to build and improve skills and it will also supposedly strengthen reading comprehension. Again, I glanced at it for a very short amount of time, so I have no clue if it actually works, but want to explore deeper. Penny Kittle has a wealth of resources on making writing the heart of your curriculum. Write Beside Them is wonderful.

I teach calculus to seniors this year, and the Best columbus Blue Jackets Mitchell & Ness Gray Popsicle Shirt But I will love this entire class has years of fundamental math gaps that I don’t even know where to START trying to remediate. Like basic fractions, trying to cancel (x+2)/x = 2, seeing sin(2x) and trying to use the product rule with sin and 2x… some still can’t even add or subtract consistently, how the hell am I supposed to get through six unit of calculus for a dual enrollment course??? Are you being serious that high school kids don’t know this? But I also read to my girls every night and we did / do mad libs on road trips. Girl when I tell you this is NOT what a significant amount of my 14-15 year olds are able to say, I’m dead serious. Ofc it’s different everywhere and I don’t wanna make huge generalizations across the board, but my high school is a very “high expectations/rigorous” type environment, and it’s truly wild how many enormous gaps they expose when we start getting into more challenging stuff. Also sidebar, this year I have at least 3 9th graders that have never passed an English class. Like. It’s so sad. This is where we are unfortunately.
