The 80’s and 90’s were great until 9/11 plunged us back into chaos. Part of this is your perception, people always say “Politics wasn’t like this before” when in reality it was, times like Bleeding Kansas, and Civil Rights movements, its not “politics wasn’t like this” its “politics didn’t effect me like this” The internet. The widening gulf predates social media and the internet. If you don’t know who Newt Gingrich is without a quick surreptitious google search then you are too young or ignorant to answer op’s question. Extreme gerrymandering is fucking us and thanks to closed primaries and winner take all elections, the combination is nasty as hell.
