i went to a program long ago in Washington DC my senior year of high school and the Baby Grinch last Christmas I gave you my bla bla bla shirt moreover I love this class was made up of students from across the states AND a matching amount of students from Puerto Rico. about 300 total. i’m from southern california so it was a very different exposure for me. those kids were some of the most fun, nice and genuine group of friends i’ve ever made. some of us love you! I remember dating someone that had no idea (including her family). She was very confused when I explained it to her. But I find that most folks outside of the NYC/NJ area just didn’t know. At some point I just expected no one to know it. Puerto Ricans do play federal taxes, they do not pay federal personal income tax on income generated in Puerto Ricans.

On the mainland U.S., many people from different walks of life are treated badly for one reason or another related to discrimination. It’s not only people from PR or who have a Hispanic background. It’s not only related to ethnicity. Discrimination against traditionally discriminated groups on a mass level happens daily because of habitual biases that U.S. culture and society do little to correct. In fact, many of these biases and the related discrimination are perpetually promoted in advertising, on social media and by news agencies and politicians. For example, you can be simply a certain gender and look externally a certain way, and a large portion of society think all the wrong things about you, which then prompts adverse travel and other experiences. Women, for example, are also treated like second-class citizens. You can have no family or strong social support. You can have a speech impediment or a stutter. You can have a cane or a wheelchair when younger than expected. You can be male, healthy and homeless. You can be a veteran. You can be financially struggling when it’s not expected of your gender, age group or even of someone with your level of supposed intelligence. Any of these things, and, sadly, so many more, become instant marks against the person and brings out prejudices, negative societal beliefs, etc. in other people.
