The server takes time away from tables to take the order(or review it in the case of mobile or online), get it from the cooks, bag it, ensure condiments and utensils are all there and in some cases could still be getting paid $2.13 an hour. I used to do this and don’t think it should be 15-20% but tip your servers. Throw a $1 or $2. I think the system is broken but until it’s fixed don’t think that the servers are asking because they are greedy. That’s exactly the point. In ‘some cases’ they could be getting paid $21.30 an hour. In some cases $50 an hour. In some cases $3 an hour. How is a customer supposed to know? And why the hell should a customer be expected to remedy the injustice? How about the person who cooked the food – how much did they make, and why am I not tipping to bring their income up so that its higher than the person who just bagged it?

We go out to a restaurant twice a month on average and I’ve always tipped 15-25% range minimum. Depending on factors, but never less than 15%. Shit like this would make me NEVER support that restaurant again. When I have a full bar and have food orders coming in, I run my ass off to make sure it gets out in a reasonable amount of time and people’s drinks aren’t empty. It’s so overwhelming sometimes. I never expect 20% on to-go orders, but it really sucks when people order $150 worth of food while I’m slammed and then don’t leave me a dime. Especially because I not only make the food but bag it, make sure all of their sauces, sides, napkins etc are all there.
