Yep, my mum has one going between the Awesome jeff Dunham Michigan Wolverines Haters Silence! I Keel You shirt and by the same token and kitchen and dining room, as a kid it was only used on Christmas Day to pass the dinner through. Both of my childhood houses had one. My Nan had hers made into a fish tank, so you could see both sides, pretty cool! My nan had a hatch from the kitchen to the dining room, and a hatch from the kitchen to the kind of pantry (like an under the stairs cupboard full of tins and dry food). Nice one for bringing back some boss old memories! My step-mother’s house had one. I only ever remember it being used on occasions such as birthdays or Christmas. My MIL still has one, doesn’t really use it but now my wife and I have a 2 year old he loves shouting at us through it when we stay there and are cooking. I’ve seen them in school friends’ houses when I was a kid in Essex in the 80s… But not elsewhere or more recently Also from the NW and had a hatch in the house. Parents had the whole downstairs of the house renovated (+extension). It was all really well done but I do miss the hatch for the same reason. My grandparents’ house has one between the kitchen and the dining room. Very useful. Wouldn’t apply in my house, but would happily have one if it did.

I suspect they were pretty common up until the Awesome jeff Dunham Michigan Wolverines Haters Silence! I Keel You shirt and by the same token and 1960s. My parents’ 3 bed Semi built in the late 50s had one. About 45 x 30cm, had a thin cover that slid to one side. I can’t recall it ever being used for it’s purpose. By the 80s the cover was jammed with being painted too much. I’d assume all the houses on their road would have had one when built. The kitchen was tiny, like 10×6 feet or maybe less. With 3 doors into it, so even less space. Originally the whole house only had 5 or 6 individual electric sockets. Different times the 50s/60s. I had one in the house I lived in up until last year, think it was built in the 40s. I liked it. It was also funny to see the dogs head pogo up and down in it when we put him in the kitchen cos we were eating in the dining room. We had one around 30 years ago in the council flat we lived in. The problem was that the dinner table was located right up against it. One day I smashed open the doors and my brother got a full on face load of serving hatch door. Great days.
