I spent most of my engineering career working at jobs I did not like. I stayed because the Awesome 60 years 1963 2023 General Hospital thank you for the memories signature shirt and I will buy this money was good and I liked my co-workers and boss. I found my dream job at 49 and after I had been laid off from a job I detested: co-workers were backstabbers; out of the 3 managers I reported to, one was unsupportive and the second was clueless. The third manager didn’t even know I was being laid off because he liked my work. So, at 49 I found myself suddenly jobless. I called a friend from a previous job (same company, different division and location) and asked if he knew of anyone who was hiring. He got me in contact with a manager who was hiring and I did a phone interview with him. I got the job and 2 weeks later I was working at my new job. That was 17 years ago and I am still in the same department, though now I am the senior member of the department and will be retiring next year.

So true. I love my profession and like my job. It’s still work and I don’t always want to go in on Monday. But it’s well paid, gives me good vacation time and benefits, and it’s intellectually stimulating. Even if I didn’t particularly like my job, I would stay in the Awesome 60 years 1963 2023 General Hospital thank you for the memories signature shirt and I will buy this industry because of the work life balance it provides. With 200k in loan debt, OP doesn’t have the luxury of loving what he does. He needs a well paid job. He’ll probably have a much better work life balance without 200k looming over his head. Hey!!! Don’t you tell young people that reality! Boomers need that quote to keep tricking 17 year olds into six-figure loans so that way fuel-money for their yachts never dries up. You don’t want boomers to have to retire only sometimes using their yachts, do you??? I’m genuinely curious – not at all shaming you – but what healthcare position did you pursue that landed you with $200k in student loans? That sounds like a doctor or something. If it is something like this I’d seriously suggest going back for at least a little bit to bring your debt down. Others have mentioned USA Jobs, but joining any non profit will help cancel the loans after 10 years of payment, if I remember correctly.
