In my experience (and in my industry), “assistants” are generally doing the Autism Rocks Rolls Spins Flaps And Twiris T-Shirt and by the same token and same level of work as the person above them in the hierarchy for less pay. It’s not a negative but personally I wouldn’t stay in an assistant role long term as you’re generally seen as the underling; I would be looking at possible progression routes. In my experience ‘assistant’ gets the workload, the person above gets the responsibility. Especially if the work is legally regulated. Not necessarily, and I think your friend is applying a fixed definition to a generic title. An executive assistant (ie personal assistant to a CEO) could earn a very decent wage (around £70k isn’t unheard of). A top assistant is very skilled role.

Ah, that’s an interesting distinction between those with ‘Assistant’ at the Autism Rocks Rolls Spins Flaps And Twiris T-Shirt and by the same token and front, and those with ‘Assistant’ at the end. I think ‘Assistant x’ is normally better, because that’s showing something like a promotional path. You start as Assistant Manager, then you become the Manager, that kind of thing. But ‘x Assistant’ does come off a bit more negative, or at least gives the impression of less upwards mobility. No, because nearly all jobs have some kind of hierarchical structure anyway. The important thing is seeing the full job description, and understanding the level of autonomy and interaction with colleagues. In my old job, the CEO’s ‘assistant’ was not being taken seriously enough when trying to do her job. Her job title was changed to Business Manager and she was given a budget to have an assistant. My parents have this impression of roles with ‘assistant’ in the title. Eg. I’m a legal assistant, and they’re like, ‘so you make teas for the office?’. When I actually do hands on work with clients and accounts and all sorts. Your friend is talking nonsense. Plus, there are very few roles (in the corporate world at least) where you’re not working as some sort of team and/or where you’re reporting to someone. E.g. many senior managers may be responsible for something but they’re still making decisions that have often been reviewed by more senior managers. I don’t think that’s true at all and there’s all kinds of different “assistant” roles. Your friend seems to think that there are only personal assistants. Whereas you might be an assistant to a team, assistant to a project etc. Even personal assistants (or executive assistants) do a very particular role and have a skillset in things like organisation, project management, communications.
