Of course. And curfew rules. And pet rules. I work with the As per my last email shirt Also,I will get this homeless, I’ve been punched in the throat by Methed out Molly. All I’m saying is that “Go sleep in a shelter” isn’t a catch all solution and I’ve had to help find resources for perfectly reasonable people who just happen to be in a hard place. The thing is though, there needs to be a place for homeless people actually seeking stability to go without the disruption of addicts and untreated mental illness holding them back. So it’s not as easy as just get rid of the rules. Oh, I definitely don’t think we should get rid of the rules! Just acknowledging life is hard living on the streets. The city I grew up in had a single shelter made by Catholic missionaries. It was a hellhole because they took everyone. Everyone. I don’t know how anyone would ever get sober there, I couldn’t walk by without someone trying to sell me heroin. It was rough when I was getting sober and I didn’t have to live there. I think a combination of both is best, have low barrier shelters for people to get some kind of stability and be able to begin to think about getting clean be it from methadone, rehab, Suboxone, whatever and have systems in place for what they need to do so such as mental health treatment or what have you. Then, once they are able to do that, transfer them to sober/higher barrier to entry shelters with drug testing, kinda like a long term rehab. The people trying to get sober are able to stay away from easy access to drugs and people using, while the people who are still using have a place they can go. This is how the city I’m currently living in does it. Getting clean on the street is impossible. Can’t be done. With opioids, 98% of people who have been using for a year or more fail at detoxing at home; much less in a tent exposed to the elements with people stopping by asking them for drugs constantly, wanting to smoke meth, and all the other shit that goes on.

at a bare minimum shelters and I don’t mean like a city shelter, I basically mean insulated sheds with power, a door and they get a key to that door to come and go as they please. I’ve always thought this would be a reasonable solution. Essentially give them a tiny studio apartment with the As per my last email shirt Also,I will get this basics and some shared facilities for things like showering and laundry and kitchens, and an area for mental health, education and job assistance, and addiction support. Enlist those that live there to work in those areas (if appropriate) in exchange for slightly larger living spaces. Basically becomes a group of halfway houses with private homes to retreat to. There are places that are trying this and it’s actually working to a decent degree. But obviously it’s a tough issue to solve. Not only did it improve the lives of the person gaining housing it cost the city less in emergency response expenses.
