I agree with this, and yet some of my favorite songs are Springsteen covers. He wrote some good lyrics, they just need someone else to sing them. His voice is a true representation of his music, though. Blue-collar, gravelly passionate desperation. Life sucked for lower middle class people at that time (same as it ever was) and artists like Bruce were able to capture that feeling with their music, it sounding rough made it more appealing because people could relate. I hated it when I was a kid then, my mom played the “Born in the USA” album over and over….I was too young to understand it, and God is the music repetitive on that song, the keyboard does the same riff, over and over and over, even when the song breaks down for a second, “nah, nah nah nah nah, nah”…my lord please make it stop. The song I came to love on the album was “The River”. There’s a desperation to Bruce’s voice that translates, whether he’s singing about politics, heartbreak, etc. The music industry has driven that out of most artists now. They write your lyrics for you and autotune your flaws. They control the narratives. Fluffy subjects translate to $$ from fluffy people. Maistream music doesn’t incite deeper thinking or introspection. It’s all skin-deep and vain, BUT my gosh are they in-tune!! Until you hear them live.

If you’re talking his career, then you’re just dumb as rocks. Don’t have to like him, but you have to respect him as a songwriter/musician/singer/etc. Mariah Carey (when she could still sing). Yes she had amazing range but her songs were so… bland. Banal. The same. I feel similarly about Ariana Grande today- great range, crappy songs. It’s like they both are trying to sound like breathy, sultry teenage girls… it’s cringy. Imagine Dragons. They did a jazz version of one of their songs on Howard Stern that showcased their talents. Yet, they repeat their “winning” formula to sell the next album. Some artists are so overrated that their voices get annoying (maybe thats just me). I find her voice, tswift’s, and Harry Styles’s voices very annoying. Often, I find myself looking for covers of their songs to listen to if it has a good beat/lyrics (which is few and far between). I believe actors can suffer from it too (the rock and Kevin Hart in animated movies).
