What it all comes back to is would they bother paying £40 to open a small claims and then how hard would the Anthrax judge dredd mosh it up shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this judge laugh them out of court. It’s poorly written and clearly the recipient of such a contract has no intention to create legal relations – a key feature of a legally binding contract. It’s not perfectly written, but it’s plenty clear enough that the knocker can’t plead that they had no idea they’d be charged. Why would you think that the writer of the sign did not intend to create legal relations? It makes no sense that they’d intend the sign to be unenforceable. This doesn’t seem too different from any other unilateral contract tbf; similar to lost and found reward posters. Don’t get me wrong it probably isn’t gonna work in court but I’d be interested to know why It’s not far from being a contract, similar to going to a multi story car park where you see the sign before you enter telling you the terms of parking and that you have to pay.

To be valid there needs to be some basic elements to a contract – an offer and acceptance, consideration and intent to create legal relations. You could argue that a better written sign drawing attention to it could fulfil those basics.
