Seizing assets of another nation and freezing them is one thing. Selling them off is another issue. With the US doing this, nothing will stop Russia from seizing all foreign assets in Russia and nationalizing them. Any corporate with assets in Russia may just consider those assets permanently lost, including the technology and everything else. As you said, this sets a bad precedent for any future conflict, especially when the US is confronting China in the East. Nothing will stop China from nationalizing all countries’ money and assets of the US in China once conflict broke out. And with the way China is spending on the military, a conflict between China/Taiwan and China/SEA will eventually happen. “No person shall…be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.”

The US can just seize and sell your shit at will? I have the same question for Putin nationalizing foreign assets. Do property rights not exist anymore when sanctioned? Property rights would have a chance of standing if the oligarchs were US citizens. Of course, they would never pay US taxes, or be subject to subpoenas or extradition. Property rights have never been absolute, anywhere. The government has always had limited tools to claim property. See: eminent domain, civil forfeiture. I’m glad someone’s asking this. This is technically a pretty blatant violation of the 4th and 5th amendments, which apply to non-citizens as well. I dunno. I’m all for punishing these amoral sycophants but this smells off to me. You’ve gotta think about the precedent it sets and how it might be abused later, due process isn’t something that should only be respected when it’s convenient.
