I mean how many jobs let you go on vacation for a month or bring you somewhere abroad? Most don’t. Au pair agencies have a lot of rules about things like this. Room and board, insurance, you have to provide them a car, and if the au pair complains, you end up paying out the whole contract and losing the au pair. It’s also, technically at least, supposed to be a position for students or other young people. The nominal pay they receive is spending money, not living money. At least in the US someone can also only be an Au pair for 2 years max. Some agencies and host families can still be exploitive, but characterizing an au pair as an indentured servant is inaccurate

The difference with an au pair is what you pay them, is on top of free room and board, transportation, phone, and many of your bills paid by them, so that money stretches FAR further than you’d expect. I used to work with a guy who got “imported nannies” as his other co workers jokingly called them. An au pair, professionally employed through an agency, is paid $200/week + room + food + 2 weeks paid vacation. And that’s a good thing if it works for you! It sounds like you serve a warm and caring family. It’s really not my point that you can have these experiences too. But I think you know that there are not just nice families out there.
