I had a goodbye party from a job I was at for almost 3 years. Take the farewell lunch with your boss and don’t care if the rest of them attend or not. It’s a nice gesture from your boss with whom you can leave on good terms. Absolutely. Even better, tell the boss that you’d like to invite a few handpicked people to go out with, and not make a department-wide thing. Even just one person, if not a table of 4 or 6 – people that you actually connected with, people who’ll make for fun conversation at lunch. Your boss seeing you have a collegial yet fun time with people that you really gel with leaves a lasting impression, which won’t hurt down the road. You have the right to politely decline the invitation or see it through. If you want to use this place or colleagues as a reference, I’d be more inclined to attend, but it isn’t necessary to do so if you don’t want it. Your feelings are justified, and only you know in your heart of hearts what feels right.

I left my job for several reasons, but #1 was toxicity. On my last day, I was surprised with an in-office lunch, and verbally disrespected by some of those prejudiced against me while we sat together to “enjoy” our final moments together. It was agonizing. But not because they were more horrible than ever. It was because I knew I was walking out of those doors in a mere hour, and I could barely contain my excitement.
