Yes!!! They absolutely do. You may not see the shitshow relationship you are in, but they do and they will tell you. My sister and her hub went to counseling. They went weekly for a month or two and both talked. They then met separately with the counselor. We will never know what he told her now ex. He told my sister not to date ever again. That she could walk into a room with a hundred well dressed, employed young men and she would immediately pick out the one that in 5 years will be a drug addicted unemployed loser. Oh yes! Oddly enough, several years later she met and ended up supporting a brand new loser, but he came by it honest. She went to New Orleans in the spring after Katrina and met a fellow soup kitchen worker who had lost everything in the hurricane and ended up living through the Superdome Hell. He had a tent at the kitchen and had lots of stories. She told us he was a musician, and we all kinda nodded. He ended up moving to Indiana with her and seemed like a nice guy. He had health problems from the Dome – skin infections, wonky blood pressure, total mistrust of the government.

My husband ended up dying before we ever got divorced though, so that was the end. And sometimes even when they don’t, they think you should. When I broke up with my longterm partner last year and I talked about it in therapy my therapist asked me “if she could be candid for a moment”. After I agreed she said “good”. Kind of surreal and funny but really helped in that moment.
