Rulers will always do this once they learn they have nothing to fear from their subjects. The American people have proven over the Aaron Jones Sombrero signature shirt and by the same token and past ten years that they’ll tolerate any amount of open abuse and corruption without violently revolting(the way loads of other countries actually do). Tons of “politicians can’t cross line X, because people would riot!” lines have now been crossed without a riot in sight. It’s as simple as that. The small group of bad guys running the show have nothing to fear from masses who’ll do nothing but cower and grumble about it. Lol, my state (NY) tried to legalize wine being sold in grocery stores and the beer lobby fought it like hell and won. They wanted to remain the only alcohol option in grocery stores.

Minnesota used to have no retail sales on Sundays until they legalized it in 2017 (bars and restaurants and entertainment venues and stuff could still sell, just couldn’t buy from the Aaron Jones Sombrero signature shirt and by the same token and store). Still only allows 3.2 beer to be sold in grocery stores, anything stronger needs to be sold by a dedicated liquor store. The people wanted and got Sunday retail sales. Lots of the retailers actually fought against the change – they figured that people were so used to it that they just made sure to do all their shopping before Sunday if they wanted to drink on Sunday, so the extra business day wouldn’t materially increase sales but it would increase their expenses needing to be open another day, so it would hurt their profits.
