We do have some famous scientists now but maybe we only know when if we are scientists ourselves (which I am). Mostly, however, is research done in big groups now and everyone knows that it’s not always the head of the group who is the actual genius. My take is that modern Academia just isn’t made to ‘think big thoughts’ anymore. When Niels Bohr came up with the atomic model, he spent more than half a decade on this one thing. I don’t think that can happen today – modern academics need to be publishing something all the time or they lose funding.
