I stupidly forgot about this incident until it proceeded to an even bigger fine which I couldn’t pay in time, and then it ballooned into a full court summons and a £1000 fine. Plus additional evidence that the station I was travelling to had a tap-in reader (but I later found out was only for GWR members specifically) and thus it was an honest mistake. If you go to court and are found guilty of a criminal act – even if the penalty is a Fine, or Community Service? That mark is there for a decade!
